Right now, July 12 (2004), the government is debating if there should be a Federal Marriage Amendment to say that marriage is between a man and a woman.
This is a decision that they will be voting on.
Why am I bringing this up? Do we have an obligation to get involved in these decisions?
Lets see:
This is what the Bible says to believers about getting involved:
MT 5:13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
Salt in those days was unclean, if it got wet the salt would actually wash away. What was left was useless, because it wasn't salt anymore.
What is that saying to us? What does it actually have to do with us? If you think about what salt does to food you will know what it means. Salt influences the taste of food drastically. So if you cook without salt it usually doesn't taste very good. The same thing happens with the world, if we do not influence it, it will go places you really don't want it to go.
Here is another point:
MT 5:14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
In other words, don't hide out. We have to make a stand. I think it's our responsibility to tell the government what we want.
You say: "But that's the government, what can I do?"
Not everyone is called to be a spokes person, but everyone can be involved. We can be involved by voting, by calling our Senators and letting them know how we feel, by sending e-mails or we can send letters.
Every vote counts and if enough people vote, we become a majority instead of a minority. Remember how few a votes it took in Florida to decide the last presidential election? It matters.
Also it says to let our light shine before men. By being involved and being an example to others, we will influence them in what they do. Just like you worry about your kids influence, we can be an influence.
But why do I think this? A lot of people say: "I am a Christian and I the government is not my responsibility. It is not my problem."
Lets read:
RO 13:1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
Here is a surprise: Government was put in place by God.
So we ask, why then is the government so corrupt?
Why are a lot of areas of government so ungodly?
Because we do not do our part. Many Christians believe we don't need to get involved.
If Government was put in place by God, don't you think he would want us to make sure it functions the way He intended?
If God put the government in place and we are God's people shouldn't we take care of what God established?
Earlier we read we should be the salt of the earth. Are we?
Here is the Conclusion:
Here is the point I am trying to make. I believe the Bible tells us to be involved in what is going on. The Federal Marriage Amendment issue is just one issue. Yes it is a very important issue, but it is just one of many. There are issues all year long that influence the world around us and influence us. There are issues that will influence the world as we know it and once we are gone our children will still have to live in this world.
If we knew for sure Jesus was coming back tomorrow, we could say don't worry about it. But we don't know, it could be another 1000 years or more. We don't know.
Lets make sure we are the salt of the earth the way God intended.
