Most people believe there is a God. A lot of people even believe in creation. Where it gets real fuzzy is when Jesus comes into the picture.
So let's say you believe this first part. Where do you go from there?
Start reading the Bible to find out if you believe what it tells you. Just starting out, you should start in the NT, because that will give you the life of Jesus, the history of the early church and the Epistles. The Epistles are letters to the early church as it spread out across the area.
I say start with the Gospels, which are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Each book is an account of the Life of Jesus, but as seen from the different writers perspectives. We are going to look at verses out of Matthew.
Let's Read:
MT 1:18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
MT 1:20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
MT 1:22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" --which means, "God with us."
MT 1:24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
This was prophesied in the Old Testament in Isaiah 7:13/14. In other words, it was predicted.
So who is this Jesus?
PHP 2:6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, PHP 2:7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. PHP 2:8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross!
So what did we just read? Lets see.
Jesus was not a regular person. His Mom became pregnant with him thru a miracle from God. Joseph who was to marry Mary still married her because of an Angel appearing to him to confirm the miracle. The Angel also told them what Jesus would be called: Immanuel, this means God with us.
In Philippians it said this of Jesus:
He didn't consider himself equal with God the father.
He made himself nothing.
He walked on earth as a man.
He was obedient to the point of death.
Conclusion:
Jesus is not a regular person. He is God and man.
The term GODman is sometimes used for him. This is because even so he is 100% God he is also 100% man. This may not make total sense to us, but that is what the Bible teaches. As awesome as God is, it should not surprise us that we can't understand everything he does.
Jesus did not quit being God, but he also became a person.
